Sanna Kannisto was born in 1974 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. She studied photography in Helsinki along with life moulding study visits in Peru, French Guinea, Brazil and Costa Rica. Today her photographs can be found in many collections including the Pompidou Centre and in museums in the whole world.

Sanna Kannisto, whose photographs make the relationship between art and nature a subject of discussion, holds numerous national and international prizes and awards.

The KUUSI exhibition is showing, amongst other things, works from the Fieldwork series in which she stages and photographs the flora and fauna of the rain forest in a mobile “Field Studio”. This consists of a white box with black curtains if required, similar to a theatre stage. With help of biologists she very gently captures mainly birds but also large insects or small mammals and positions them on branches and twigs in her Field Studio. In these surroundings, which are artificial to the highest degree, living beings and plants experience a context shift which could not be more impressive. The scaling down of the photographs exudes quiet and clarity. The special staging steers the view to the physiognomy of the living beings and grants the observer an unbelievably close insight into the overwhelming diversity of the rain forest.

Several photographs show research situations, partly real, partly purposefully created by Sanna Kannisto – although it is difficult to spot the difference between the two forms.

The main intention of her work is to emphasise how nature is displayed in art and science and how mankind achieves access to nature, especially the rain forest, through various methods and theories depending on its demands.
