Visuelle Strukuren

Visual structures

The young Canadian artist Nika Fontaine concentrates on spiritual, cosmological and metaphysical subject areas in her paintings. She used mantras, meditation and Tibetan music to send herself into a transcendental state in order to work on her series ›Astral Guide‹ and ›Astral Bodies‹. The development process is similar to that of action painting, the movements are dynamic and intuitive. In these series she involves herself directly with the subjects of Death and Reincarnation. Nika Fontaine forces the viewer to react strongly – the various methods of reception and interpretation are completely open.

The centre of the exhibition is the installation of ›Pimp my Ride to Heaven‹: a coffin which is covered with intensive colours and various materials like glitter, crystals, rhinestones, flowers and even sound, all which is quite unconventional. The contrast is frightening and at the same time fascinating. Nika Fontaine approaches a subject which is dramatically supressed in the Western world with disarming lightness and irony. The installation reflects the form of death cult well-known to us and converts a morbid and sad subject into something positive – provoking and humorous. The installation is supplemented with the accompanying 180x250 cm large painting and a bouquet of flowers, which is fresh on the day of the vernissage but is not changed during the course of the exhibition, allowing it to wilt and decay naturally. Death loses its fright, becomes approachable and more definite. The meaning of the installation is intensified when one looks into Nika Fontaine’s private life which she mentions in her text to ›Pimp my Ride to Heaven‹.

The paintings hanging opposite the installation take their colour and material elements from ›Pimp my Ride to Heaven‹ and weave a different spell over the observer. Through the lucid dreams which she experienced in her transcendental condition, the artist was able to see her art on completely new levels. By using glitter she was able to create the colour intensity she perceived, even the viewer can be hypnotised by the special structure of the picture and the choice of material and colour. Nika Fontaine’s wall works have a magical, mystic aura which provokes the perception of the aesthetic, releases strong emotions and allows the invisible to be felt.
