Im zarten Alter von 15 Jahren war der im finnischen Turku geborenen Performance-Künstlerin Mimosa Pale klar: sie ist eine Künstlerin. Mit 16 Jahren fand sie sich tanzend auf dem Dach der Sommerakademie Salzburg, in der sie einen Kurs im action painting belegte, wieder – der Beginn einer nicht endenden Leidenschaft für den performativen Akt. Mimosa Pale studierte Kunst in England, Helsinki und Paris mit dem Schwerpunkt Bildhauerei und stellte fest, welche symbiotische Kraft den eigentlich konträren Disziplinen innewohnt; so sind statische, skulpturale Elemente oft Teil ihrer ephemeren Performance. Mimosa Pale und Jukka Rusanen haben sich bereits während des Studiums kennengelernt, die beiden verbinden zahlreiche gemeinsame Ausstellungsprojekte.

In Berlin führte sie Jahrelang ein Geschäft, in dem sie ausgefallene haute-couture Hüte designte. Teil des oft sehr großen Kopfschmucks waren bodenlange dünne Stoffbahnen, die den Körper des Trägers vollständig verhüllten. Diese Fransen aus verschiedenen Materialien begleiten Mimosa Pale bis heute, sie sind auch der Hauptprotagonist der eigens für die Vernissage der Ausstellung ›KUUSI‹ kreierten Performance, bei der die Fransen an einem Baumstamm befestigt sind. Das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen dem immobilen Baumstamm und den agilen Fransen, die durch die Künstlerin teils zufällig, teils kontrolliert in Bewegung geraten, fasziniert Mimosa Pale nachhaltig. Die Positionierung am Eingang der Galerie ermöglicht dabei eine konstante Interaktion zwischen Besucher und Kunstwerk. Passend zur Waldthematik (der Ausstellungstitel ›KUUSI‹ bedeutet auf Deutsch nicht nur sechs, sondern auch Fichte), gesellen sich zu dieser Installation noch ein Laubbläser und eine singende Säge, die der Holzfäller-Tradition entstammt. Während der Performance, bei der Mimosa Pale die Fransen in Bewegung versetzt, ist sie gleichermaßen konzentriert im Moment, als auch offen für die Menschen und die Reaktionen ihrer Umgebung.

At the tender age of 15 the performance artist Mimosa Pale, born in Finnish Turku, was convinced of one thing – she is an artist. At 16 she could be found dancing on the roof of the summer academy Salzburg where she attended a course in action painting – the beginning of a never-ending passion for the performative act. Mimosa Pale studied art in England, Helsinki and Paris with the main focus on sculpture and realised which symbiotic powers are inherent to intrinsic contrary disciplines; thus static, sculptural elements are often part of her ephemeral performance. Mimosa Pale and Jukka Rusanen met during their course of study; they have had many joint exhibition projects.

In Berlin she had a business for many years, in which she designed unusual haute-couture hats. A part of the often very large head-pieces were thin floor-lengths of material which could envelop the body of the wearer. These fringes made from various materials accompany Mimosa Pale even today; they are also the main protagonist for the performance especially created for the Vernissage of the KUUSI exhibition, in which the fringes are fixed to a tree trunk. The tension between the stationary tree trunk and the agile fringes through which the artist moves sometimes by coincidence, sometimes very purposefully had lasting effects on Mimosa Pale. The position at the gallery’s entrance enables a constant interaction between visitor and the work of art. Appropriate to the woodland theme (the name of the exhibition “KUUSI” means not only “six” in English but also “spruce”) there is also a leaf blower and a singing saw together with this installation, which originate from the tradition of wood-cutting. During Mimosa Pale’s performance in which the fringes are made to move, she is very concentrated but also open for the people and the reaction from her surroundings.
